Black and White Portraits From Cambodia

Every day, I post a new, original black and white portrait from Cambodia as My Photograph of the Day. Today’s selection is a collaborative black and white portrait from the series The Cambodians titled At the Park.

Each piece is a unique creation reflecting my ongoing quest for artistic expression.

Black and white street portrait of a Cambodian woman in Nike sportswear standing confidently in a city park with her hand on her hip, smiling over her shoulder. From the series The Cambodians by Todd Black at Light and More.

At the Park

Cambodian Woman Park Portrait — Confidence and Grace

This compelling Cambodian woman park portrait radiates an easy, confident energy that distinguishes it immediately within the series. The hand-on-hip pose, the direct over-the-shoulder smile, and the Nike sportswear combine to create a portrait of a modern Khmer woman entirely comfortable and in her own space.

The park setting works beautifully here — the softly rendered palm tree and dappled light create an organic, airy backdrop that suits the subject’s relaxed athletic energy. The tonal rendering is among the series’ most delicate — the white Nike outfit presents a genuine exposure challenge that has been handled with considerable skill, retaining fabric detail and panel lines throughout without blowing out.

A Portrait of Everyday Cambodian Life

The amulet necklace and prayer bead bracelet introduce a quiet spiritual counterpoint to the athletic context — small details that reward closer inspection and add unexpected depth to what might otherwise read as a straightforward Cambodian woman park portrait.

The composition is clean and well-considered, the three quarter framing showing the figure confidently. The bench visible in the background left is a minor distraction, and the partial umbrella edge intruding at the top right slightly unsettles the frame.

Emotionally this is a portrait of uncomplicated confidence and warmth — a woman pausing mid-exercise to share a genuine smile with a stranger’s camera.
