Every day, I post a new, original black and white portrait from Cambodia as My Photograph of the Day. Today’s selection is a new collaborative black and white portrait from the series The Cambodians titled Devotee With Tattoos and Altar.
Each piece is a unique creation reflecting my ongoing quest for artistic expression.

Devotee with Tattoos and Altar
Khmer Sacred Tattoo Portrait — Faith Written on the Body
This extraordinary image stands as one of the most culturally significant examples of Khmer sacred tattoo portrait photography in the entire series. The subject’s Sak Yant tattoos — covering both forearms, hands, neck and chest with sacred Khmer script and spiritual symbols — are among the most visually and culturally compelling details captured across the entire collection. These are not decorative markings but devotional inscriptions believed to confer protection, luck and spiritual power.
The elaborately appointed home altar behind him — bronze Ganesh figure, framed photographs of revered monks, offering bowls, prayer beads and ornate carpeting — establishes a domestic spiritual environment of remarkable richness. Subject and setting are perfectly matched, each amplifying the other’s meaning.
The seated cross-legged pose mirrors the Monk portrait, creating an interesting visual rhyme within the series. The subject’s relaxed, open smile provides a warm human counterpoint to the intensity of the spiritual context surrounding him.
Technically the image handles a genuinely challenging environment — bright white floor tiles, complex background detail, and a wide tonal range — with considerable competence. The floor tiles are slightly overexposed, drawing the eye downward, and a tighter crop from the bottom would strengthen the composition. The right side curtain and fan are minor distractions.
As Cambodian documentary portrait photography goes, this image is exceptional — a privileged glimpse into a deeply private world of faith.
