Todd Black
Todd Black is a photographer, publisher, and diarist whose eclectic career in photography and related fields spans more than forty years.
Todd discovered photography while studying political science at Loyola College in Maryland. His early work was influenced by Andreas Feininger’s philosophy and technique. The experimental nature and sociopolitical commentary of Dadaism shaped his initial artistic direction, alongside influences from the Bauhaus movement, particularly the work of Man Ray. Later, his approach evolved through exposure to Group f/64, the documentary school epitomized by Dorothea Lange and by the modernist photography of Harry Callahan.
Today, Todd Black’s work encompasses two distinct styles: documentary-style street portraiture, predominantly in black and white, and abstract expressionist experimental work featuring multiple imaging and montage techniques.
Throughout his career, Todd has established several successful ventures. In 1987, he founded Montage Photographics in Bel Air, Maryland, followed by Gallery 21 in the same city. His international journey began in 1991 when he relocated to Antigua, Guatemala, where he established Galeria Montaje, a combination studio, gallery, and fine art framing shop. He then spent 1997 working in Cuzco, Peru, and 1998 in London, England. Upon returning to the United States in 1999, Todd founded Todd Black Photographics and Todd Black Books in Santa Fe, New Mexico. In 2012, he moved to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, and later settled in Battambang, Cambodia, in 2016, where he established Todd Black Photography and Sun Elephant Productions. Battambang remains his current home.
Todd’s work has appeared in books, brochures, magazines, and digital media. His portfolio includes freelance projects for major corporations, non-profits, and publishers. He has exhibited in galleries and public spaces both in the United States and internationally and he has self published several photography books featuring his original work.
