Black and White Street Portraits From Cambodia

Every day, I post a new, original black and white street portrait from Cambodia as My Photograph of the Day. Each piece is a unique creation reflecting my ongoing quest for artistic expression.

Today’s selection is a new collaborative black and white street portrait from the series The Cambodians titled Young Khmer Girl – Khmer New Year.

Black and white street portrait of a laughing young Khmer woman in a houndstooth Chanel jacket, arms raised joyfully during Khmer New Year celebrations. From the series The Cambodians by Todd Black at Light and More.

If the Vendor portrait broke the rules quietly, this one breaks them with complete abandon — and largely gets away with it through sheer infectious energy. The tilted frame, high shooting angle, arms raised, and that completely uninhibited laugh create a portrait that is pure kinetic joy. It’s the most dynamic and unconventional image in the series.

The houndstooth Chanel jacket is a monochrome photographer’s gift — that bold graphic pattern rendered in black and white street photography terms creates extraordinary visual texture that dominates the frame energetically without overwhelming the face.

Technically this is rough. The high angle distorts the figure, the background pavement is an awkward intrusion, and the exposure on the face is slightly hot, softening skin detail. By conventional Cambodian street portrait photography standards this image has significant technical shortcomings.

Yet none of that matters. The expression is so genuinely, explosively joyful that all technical criticism simply dissolves. This is a subject who grabbed the moment and the photographer wisely followed.

The image lives or dies entirely on emotional strength — and on that measure it is one of the series’ most memorable frames.
