Every day, I post a new, original black and white street portrait from Cambodia as My Photograph of the Day. Each piece is a unique creation reflecting my ongoing quest for artistic expression.
Today’s selection is a new collaborative black and white street portrait from the series The Cambodians titled Vendor – Khmer New Year.

Vendor — Khmer New Year — Critique
A quietly dignified portrait that places its subject firmly and convincingly within her working environment. The market setting — bagged retail items cascading into the mid-ground and shelving receding behind — creates the series’ most immersive environmental context, making this one of the strongest examples of Cambodian street portrait photography in the collection.
The subject’s expression is measured and self-possessed — a gentle, knowing smile that suggests someone comfortable being seen but not seeking attention. There is quiet pride here, readable in her steady gaze and upright bearing.
Technically the image handles a challenging high-key background well. The bright overhead market lighting could easily have overwhelmed the frame, but the exposure holds the subject’s face in a natural midtone range while allowing the background to breathe luminously rather than blow out entirely.
The dark work shirt against the bright background creates excellent tonal separation and compositional clarity — one of the better subject-background relationships in the series of black and white street portraits from Cambodia.
The main weakness is the depth of field — the merchandise in the right mid-ground is sharp enough to compete visually with the subject rather than receding cleanly. A slightly wider aperture would have resolved this.
Emotionally, a portrait of everyday working dignity — understated, honest and entirely compelling.
