Black and White Street Portraits From Cambodia

Every day, I post a new, original black and white street portrait from Cambodia as My Photograph of the Day. Each piece is a unique creation reflecting my ongoing quest for artistic expression.

Today’s selection is a new collaborative black and white street portrait from the series The Cambodians titled The Sandal Game.

Black and white street portrait of three young Khmer men in a colonial-style covered walkway, the central figure in a Dior bucket hat smiling confidently at the camera. From the series The Cambodians by Todd Black at Light and More.

The Sandal Game — Critique

A wonderfully layered and energetic group portrait that rewards repeated viewing. The three-figure composition operates on multiple spatial planes simultaneously — the centre subject commanding the foreground with charismatic confidence, the left figure providing watchful support, and the background figure whose raised arm and broad grin add a theatrical, playful energy that lifts the entire frame.

The centre subject is a natural — that Dior bucket hat, the open shirt worn with studied casualness, and the direct engaging smile mark someone entirely comfortable performing for the camera.

The architectural setting — covered walkway, tiled courtyard, colonial-style doors — is the series’ most historically resonant environment, giving this black and white street portrait from Cambodia genuine sense of place and time.

The background right figure’s raised arm creates strong diagonal energy though risks feeling slightly chaotic. The tiles add a wonderful reflective texture to the lower frame.

Technically the image handles a challenging high-contrast environment — deep shade versus bright courtyard — competently, though the highlights in the background are slightly blown. As Cambodian street photography goes, the composition and human energy more than compensate.
