Black and White Street Portraits From Cambodia

Every day, I post a new, original black and white street portrait from Cambodia as My Photograph of the Day. Each piece is a unique creation reflecting my ongoing quest for artistic expression.

Today’s selection is a new collaborative black and white street portrait from the series The Cambodians titled Young Khmer Worker – Khmer New Year.

Black and white street portrait of a shirtless young Khmer man with bleached hair and chest tattoo, smiling confidently during Khmer New Year celebrations. From the series The Cambodians by Todd Black at Light and More.

A bold and physically commanding portrait that brings a completely different visual energy to the series. The shirtless subject, bleached hair, chest tattoo and lean physique create an immediate and arresting presence — this is one of the most visually striking figures in the entire collection of black and white street portraits from Cambodia.

The tattoo is a particular asset in monochrome — the intricate traditional Khmer design rendered in fine lines against skin creates beautiful tonal subtlety that colour photography would likely have overpowered. The full body framing showing the subject’s powerful hands feels caught in a natural, unposed moment despite the direct engagement with the camera.

The background is the image’s main weakness — the building, netting and ground cover create a cluttered, tonally busy environment that competes with the subject. A shallower depth of field would have significantly strengthened the image.

Technically the skin tones are beautifully rendered with excellent detail and texture throughout, and the tonal separation between the darker arms and lighter torso shows confident exposure handling.

Emotionally, this image presents a subject who simply commands the frame, a truly engaging street portrait from Cambodia.
