Black and White Street Portraits From Cambodia

Every day, I post a new, original black and white street portrait from Cambodia as My Photograph of the Day. Each piece is a unique creation reflecting my ongoing quest for artistic expression.

Today’s selection is a new collaborative black and white street portrait from the series The Cambodians titled Store Clerk.

Black and white street portrait of a young Khmer woman standing behind a café counter wearing a Khmer Coffee apron, hands clasped, smiling gently at the camera. From the series The Cambodians by Todd Black at Light and More.

Store Clerk — Critique

A warm and environmentally rich portrait that succeeds in placing the subject firmly within her working world. The granite counter, barcode scanner, coffee shop background and Khmer Coffee apron all combine to tell a complete and immediate story — this is the series’ most contextually detailed image, and that specificity is a genuine strength.

The subject’s clasped hands resting on the counter is a natural, unforced pose that conveys both readiness and calm. The decorated nails are a lovely humanising detail that rewards closer inspection. Her expression — a gentle, slightly tentative smile — feels honest rather than performed.

Technically, the background is the main challenge. The café equipment, signage and bright window areas are only partially subdued by the depth of field, creating a busy mid-ground that competes with the subject. The barcode scanner on the left, while narratively appropriate, is distractingly prominent in the lower frame.

Tonal range is competent though the highlights in the background windows feel slightly blown, and the overall contrast could be pushed further to give the image more monochromatic authority.

Emotionally, this is a dignified and sympathetic portrait of everyday working life.
