Black and White Street Portraits From Cambodia

Every day, I post a new, original image as My Photograph of the Day. Each piece is a unique creation reflecting my ongoing quest for artistic expression.

Today’s selection is a new collaborative black and white street portrait from the series The Cambodians titled Barista.

Black and white street portrait of a young Khmer woman wearing a Ralph Lauren track jacket with white racing stripes, smiling softly at the camera in a café setting. From the series The Cambodians by Todd Black at Light and More.

Barista — Critique

A quietly appealing portrait with a distinctly different emotional tone — more reserved and contemplative than the exuberance of the Coffee Vendor. That subtle, closed smile carries a gentle mystery that draws the viewer in rather than immediately winning them over. It’s a more sophisticated emotional register.

The Ralph Lauren track jacket with its bold white racing stripes works beautifully in monochrome, creating strong graphic lines that lead the eye upward toward the face. It’s an unexpected wardrobe choice for a barista, and that small incongruity adds character.

Technically, the image displays a full tonal range — clean whites in the jacket stripes reaching into zone 8, and genuine depth in the hair and background shelving down toward zone 2. The midtones dominate deliberately, creating a tonal cohesion that suits the subject’s quiet, understated presence. Whether that midtone density serves or slightly softens the image’s drama is a legitimate aesthetic question, but it reflects the scene honestly.

The left side bokeh feels slightly unbalanced — softer than the right in a way that reads as lens edge behaviour rather than intentional depth of field control, giving the frame a mildly asymmetric quality.

Overall a charming and tonally considered portrait, whose greatest strength may be its restraint.
